My Twitter Recommendations
Twitter can be a wasteland of useless updates. But it can also be an informative tool, consolidating headlines, tips, and other interesting snippets in a handy little feed. I admit that I am not an expert on all things Twitter--not by a longshot. But I have spent a meager amount of time finding some interesting people to follow, and I can share what I've found so far.
My mini reviews:
DiscoverMag (updates: frequently) - The Twitter stream for Discover Magazine. Intersting sciency headlines, usually several per day. Tweets are written in somewhat of a "hip" fashion rather than staid editorial language, for what it's worth.
Sample tweet:
"Can you fear me now? Study finds cell phone use up to 10 yrs doesn't cause brain cancer. http://bit.ly/7fsPnq"
drewtoothpaste (updates: regularly) - Drew is the creator of the Toothpaste for Dinner comics. His tweets are usually comedic in nature. I'm a fan.
Sample tweet:
"I can tell who's been online for > 20 years because they all type <g> instead of :) or ☺."
matcutts (updates: frequently) - Matt Cutts is sort of the public face of Google online. He posts some interesting things about Google and the web in general, but also some random stuff that isn't interesting. His Q&A Youtube videos are informative, though.
Sample tweet:
"Google announces real-time search, demos with a search for [obama]."
BobVilacom (updates: regularly) - Headlines from Bob Vila's web site focused on (what else?) home improvement, and all related topics. Often interesting.
Sample tweet:
"Not afraid of a little technology? You'll love these appliances: http://bobvila.com/t/htaa"
ggreenwald (updates: frequently) - Glenn Greenwald is a blogger who writes for Salon.com. He has a liberal perspective and a keen wit, and I usually enjoy his updates.
Sample tweet:
"Imagine going to a protest where the message was: KILL THEM WITHOUT A TRIAL!! So inspiring."
trent_reznor (updates: on and off) - Reznor to broadcasting directly to his fans. He tweeted more frequently during the last tour. He comes across as a pretty agreeable and good-humored fellow.
Sample tweet:
"RT @rob_sheridan Look what cool things happen when you have an open camera policy: http://bit.ly/24AtPJ (entirely fan-recorded/edited)"
digg_2000 (updates: regularly) - Links to the Digg stories that have at least 2,000 diggs. Occassionally interesting, but a lot of stupid stuff gets dugg up as well.
Sample tweet:
""David Bowie's Response To First American Fan Letter In 1967" - http://digg.com/d21BwuV?t1"
shitmydadsays (updates: occassionally) - A guy tweets random funny stuff his 73 year old dad says.
Sample tweet:
"You look just like Stephen Hawking...Relax, I meant like a non-paralyzed version of him. Feel better?... Fine. Forget I said it."
nprpolitics (updates: frequently) - Breaking political news of the day. Downside is that the links all get wrapped in a StumbleUpon frame for some reason.
Sample tweet:
"Administration To Slash Bailout Cost Estimate http://su.pr/2hOIcn"I may make another post with additional mini reviews. Hope you enjoyed these!
