He pretty much represents everything that's wrong with Washington journalism. I don't frequently watch Meet the Press, but I happened to today. The overwhelming majority of his questions were about the politics of health care reform, and how this or that element of the process helps or hurts this politician or that politician.
Toward the end of the show, guest Tavis Smiley seemed to have had about enough of it and asked why we aren't talking about the provisions in the bill and how they will effect the American people instead of the politics of it. When Smiley had finished, Gregory literally turned to a Republican guest and said (I'm paraphrasing), "In 1994 Republicans benefited from opposing Bill Clinton's health care effort. How do you think voting against this bill will effect Republicans in the next election?" He had in fact asked this same question about six different ways already, but hey what's one more? Also, what the fck is the Republican guest going to say? Anybody? Anybody? Oh, that Republicans will do well in the next election.
Meet the Press is 95% pure mindlessness. David Gregory is a hack. The guests simply come on and recite verbatim their respective talking points, as Gregory tosses them softballs. What a useless show. Tim Russert wasn't perfect, but he did frequently challenge his guests and get them to go outside their talking points from time to time.
