But it becomes a matter of degree. What is a suitable thing to have a death penalty for? If you don't say 'nothing' (as the entire western world except you does), then you have to say 'things that are deemed bad enough by the population' – who are you to tell the Iranian people that they're wrong to apply whatever punishment they like to a particular crime?

And since we're talking about Iran and Saudi Arabia, it would be nice to hear some criticism from your administration with regard to Saudi Arabia! That kind of double standards is one of the things that really winds us foreigners up. (And I know Britain is not innocent of this either, for example look at our differing stances on self-determination in the Falklands and Chagos Islands.)
