Here are three famous therapists in session with the same woman, Gloria. All three have super different approaches.
Carl Rogers is more empathetic, more patient-focused.

Frederick Perls is more therapist-centered and aggressive.

Albert Ellis is cognitive focused. He reminds me a bit of what it would be like to have therapy with Woody Allen.

So what do you think of each approach? Who would you want to see? Are there parts of each that you think are worthwhile while others that you think are ridiculous or unhelpful?

I think I would feel most comfortable with Carl Rogers. He has a gentle way of making the client focus on themselves and answer their own questions. I also like his interest. He gets through a few of Gloria's problems in the short time they are together. The problem I have with him is that I think as a Client I would be too invested in wanting him to like me and respect me because he himself is so nurturing and worthy of respect.

Perls isn't by far my favorite, but I do have to applaud him for not letting the patient regress into the past or future. He makes her stay in the moment. I found his method a bit egocentric though when watching him with Gloria. But after, listening to his notes from the session, I understood the deeper meaning to what he was doing and why. I just think as his patient I would leave feeling empowered, which is good, but later question whether I actually got to the root of anything, considering he didn't even discuss the reason Gloria was there.

Woody Allen, no. Talked way too much and fit her into predetermined categories. I recognize the need to organize things but I don't think it's positive to place the patient vocally into categories while she's/he's there for help.

What do you guys think?
