Smartphone navigation apps stream the data, and that means they simply don't work if you have no signal. (The GPS will still tell you where you are but there is no navigational information. I know this because there is no signal in my village :P.) Some of the places you'll be going, I'd be very surprised if there is signal.
Get an atlas, hard copy maps are priceless, and also get a dedicated sat-nav with (obviously) the map database for the northwestern states and BC.
