The icons aren't very spriteable. And there is usually only one on a page anyway, at least for the posts.
4K is quite lean. I downloaded Firefox Throttle the other day, which lets you simulate dial-up connection speed. Surfing 4K on that was a breeze. I actually set out to build the site so it would perform well on dial-up.
