Anyway, why couldn't the officials just used something like, SKYHOOK Wireless that uses trilateration; the computer will measure the distance to known wifi locations around it along with other geolocation information. Usually a laptop thief will connect to the internet eventually and they're probably going to try to log into a free wifi hotspot somewhere if they stole it because they're poor, if not their own wireless network at home or on some random open wifi near their home.

There's also software like CyberAngel specifically made to recover lost or stolen laptops.
