Windows 7 question

In all prior versions of Windows that I've used, if I'm in the open file dialog and I'm several levels deep into a nested directory structure, I'd always type ".." for the filename to move up a directory. Then, when it showed the contents of that directory, my little ".." was still there in the filename, so I could just hit enter again, and keep hitting enter to go up as many levels as I wanted.

Now, in Windows 7, when ".." takes you up a directory, it clears the file name field, and I have to type ".." again each time I want to move up. What a silly little detail, right? But I find it so annoying now. Is there any way to make it behave like past Windows?
