RAID 1 question

i want to set up a volume with my main HDD without formatting. i've got the second HDD, that i'll format.
i'm thinking something like... new raid1 with HDD's A and B, instead of wiping them clean, mirror A onto B.
i could take everyone on A, copy it to C, and set up the volume with A and B if that doesn't work - but then i'd want to mirror C onto the new volume, not just move files over (it'll be the boot drive).
possible somehow?
