Trying to get Win7 to be okay with HDD removal

So I have Win7 installed on an SSD (the C drive), and I have two other, older drives installed as well. I want to take one of the older drives out from this machine. The one I don't want to take out, I am able to disconnect with no problems (Windows is fine with it). But when I disconnect the other one, Windows won't start and goes into recovery mode. Why might this be happening?
Well I assumed it was because I had set the windows search index to be stored on that drive. So I moved it off that one, to the other one. But I still have the same problem...windows won't start without that damn drive!
Any advice?
