I've actually heard some theorize that fetishes and other sexual 'deviance' is caused by a fundamental lack of a form of love expected by the child. For example, a child might really need to be physically touched by their parents to KNOW s/he is loved. If that doesn't happen, it causes an emotional gap. The child then comes in contact with an object or an idea crosses the child's path and the gap is patched. The object/idea equals being touched by the parents emotionally. The object/idea is then erotized because of the unique moment the gap was suddenly closed.
