Tonight after work, I was a little despondent because I was really craving some sushi and there are no good sushi places around here... then I realized that I could try (again) to make some sushi myself. I didn't have time to go out to the good place and buy sushi grade fish, so I stuck to veggie-only sushi (california roll, cucumber, etc...)
I still haven't fixed several of the things I was having trouble with the last time, but I was able to make good rice tonight, which was the biggest and most important mistake I made last time. I don't think the rice was perfect, but it was much better than last time. I think I'll have the process down after one more try...
Anyway, here are some more pictures of the process, though I sort of forgot to take pictures of the finished product until I had eaten most of it. So here's the before picture:

And two pieces of the finished product:

So that's that. By the way, if anyone is trying to handle sushi rice at any point, the secret is to have a little bowl of vinegared water nearby and to dip your hands in it before you handle the rice. That way the rice doesn't stick so much and is much easier to handle.
So again, this time around was more successful, but still not fantastic. Though I will say that I thought my california roll was better than the pre-made crap you can get at most grocery stores.
Changes for next time:
- Again, I need a better bowl for the rice, and a sharper set of knives.
- Because I screwed up the rice royally the first time, I sort of intentionally held back on the vinegar/sugar mixture this time around. Much better this time, but I think I could have used a little more of the mixture without screwing it up royally.
- I kinda used too much rice on each individual roll. Next time, I'll make that layer a bit thinner, which should make the sushi tastier (or rather, provide a better balance of tastes)
That's all for now:)
