Spin off from Tem's thread. Alguna made me think of it though.

Those of you that pray for people... do you really think it does something? If you do, why?

Personally, I can't fathom the existence of a deity that would give a fuck about my petitions. I think it's arrogant to assume that I know enough about the dynamics of the universe, cause and effect, destiny, and a greater purpose to even dare project my perception of what "should" happen. Some people get around this thought by saying, "Thy will be done" but then what is the point? If he's going to be doing what he wants to anyway, why waste your breath? Just so you can make sure your opinion on the matter has been voiced?

How do you argue that you're going about it humbly? It seems terribly arrogant to me.
