You are right. However there is a large portion of the population here in the US who argue that what has been done isn't really so bad, because our government took care not to cause lasting physical harm (that some prisoners died is ignored). There is an effort to minimize the techniques and block out what effect they have had on those who suffered them.
Now had prisoners actually been raped everyone would recoil with horror, because there is no way to trivialize rape. If we understand the techniques done to prisoners to be on the moral level of rape, we should react with the same horror.
