Fox news decided to turn it into an issue by reporting on it as a "ground Zero Mosque" rather than a "Muslim community centre two city blocks from ground zero". Other news sources picked up on it, probably figuring it made a better story. When my husband first heard of it, he read that it was a giant mosque right at the former WT site, and that it was being opened September 11. He opposed it until he found out the actual facts, at which point he realised it was a complete non-issue.
