There is a fascinating column in the NY times dealing with mathematics. The premise behind it is that the author often told his mathematically illiterate friend that he would have to start from the basics and teach him everything from there to give a proper understanding of the intrigues of mathematics. So the author decided to do just that, and write a mathematics column starting with mathematics basics and working up to advanced theory. His goal is to present this in an understandable way that allows for real life applications. This column is meant for adults and is not meant to be remedial, so this is not a class on mathematics, but instead seeks to explain why so many find mathematics elegant and interesting. This is the third week so far (one per week) and this week's column is very interesting. It deal with negative numbers (which arise when subtraction is considered). It also talks about balance theory, which is very intriguing. I have enjoyed this column and I hope you do too!
