I'm agreeing with you actually all the way up to this point:
"People who think this way tend to be politically conservative."
I consider myself mostly a political liberal - but I have friends on "both sides". I actually disagree with you. I haven't found ANY consistent connection between this kind of delusion and political affiliation. I think this is a common mistake of human nature (some might even say Sin, in fact I would say it). Particularly weighing-in on the side of standard human Pride...
I've seen plenty of manifestations of this thought process on both political sides with no real consistency... and plenty of them in self-proclaimed Christians as well as self-proclaimed Atheists and Agnostics.
I truly believe it's a VERY common issue among - pretty much everyone - from time to time.
